Amrit Mahotsav of Independence Year 75 speech in English

This extraordinary interest in country or motherland is very important.  So on this day at least we are uniting as 'Indians'.  We will not easily see a different vision of 'oneness'.

We are transferring this sense of unity from generation to generation to each other by inheritance. The culture of our country is very ancient. The long history of our country's independence stands before us like the Himalayas.  You all know about the 150 years of independence and the massive struggle for freedom from it. "India is my country, all Indians are my brothers" is the universal pledge and our utmost loyalty to the Indian Constitution.

We are proud to have a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, republic in our constitution. We have enjoyed seven and a half decades of independence. Our country has made unprecedented progress in science, industrial, chemical agriculture and other fields.

We are proud to be a 'Sovereign, Socialist, Secular Democratic Republic'.

We have enjoyed seven and a half decades of freedom.  Our country has made unprecedented progress in all fields of knowledge and science.  Our achievements in agriculture, industry, trade, communication, education, health, research, defense etc. are significant.

Moreover 'social equality' (?) is a peculiar aspect of our social formation.  We are known in the world as a prosperous, well-equipped and civilized country.  Our country is strong.  It is modern and most importantly our country is democratic.  'Democracy' is a supreme value of living.  We are citizens of democratic India.  Another meaning of the word democracy is 'freedom'.  So we have been enjoying this freedom for about seven and a half decades.  After another twenty-five years, our country will celebrate the centenary of independence.  That is, as time moves forward, the history of the country becomes more ancient.  'Amrit Jubilee Year' is a great phase of time.  And this stage contains two centuries of magnificent history.  As this history is about getting rid of the British rule, it also paves the way for building a new India.  The twenty-first century has been a very special one in the history of India.  This century taught us patriotism.  This century accelerated the freedom movement.  And it was this century that also inspired the transformation.  Of course, all these things did not happen easily.  There is a broad cultural background behind this.  Due to this background, we were able to break our traditional position and accept the new change.

Today our country is entering the year of Amrit Mahatsavi, this event is important in many ways. How to analyze this time?  How to evaluate this time?  If we present the account of this time, what is needed?  That is, even though we are materially prosperous and two decades into the twenty-first century, can we still analyze our social system?  Can we advocate secularism and live away from the supremacy of religion?  Especially the country which has a great ideological tradition.  There is a rich heritage of thought.  Are we really 'carriers' of that tradition?  How did the cultural threads of our sense of unity become so tangled?  How effective were the

contemporary camps of factionalism?  How long are we going to listen to the barren talk of 'My Country, My Vision'?  What exactly is the 'content' that emerges from this discussion? Although our boom in industry, agriculture, education has been extraordinarily pleasant, have we really been able to create enough employment opportunities?  How are we going to explain it to the educated youth who have been mired in disillusionment?  Although we are known as a progressive agricultural nation, what about the suicide of farmers?  Has our traditional way of looking at each other really changed?  Or is it more polluted?  Are we really 'modern' in our personal and social lives, reminiscent of progressive ideology?

We have the ability to take over the world.  We decided to be global.  We explored new directions of creation, innovation.  We proclaimed our culture.  Climbed the peaks of prosperity.  Formulated for holistic development.  Wrote songs of unity.  New values were proclaimed.  History has been rearranged.  He had the power to dominate all areas of the world.  So, while there is such a global horse race, have we been able to create a region of peace and harmony? We love the empty chatter of caste, religion and different identities.  Breaking the monopoly in political, economic, religious, social, educational fields is not progress, but after entering those fields, it is important to behave ethically.  But we did not preserve this morality.  We became autocratic.  Arbitrary.

What exactly have we achieved in the seven and a half decades after independence?  And what is lost?  It should be considered.  There were many changes of power in the country and state.  Parties and organizations of various ideologies emerged.  Value politics gradually fell away and we learned to call politics the destructive 'game' of interests.  From Nehru to Modi, India's post-independence journey has been a long one.  This journey has many twists and turns.  It is a struggle.  If we take an x-ray of present day India, what exactly do we see?  Caste, religion, region and megalomaniacs for votes have largely become the norm.  New codes of thought and philosophy are being created.  A new script of truth and beauty is being written.  We have hatred towards each other.  Out of hatred we shot each other.  Leaders and thinkers were killed.  Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs etc. have become hate words.  At the regional level, conflicting battles have started between Brahmins, Marathas, Dalits, OBCs, nomads, tribals. It means that while on the one hand giant edifices of material prosperity are being built, we are breaking the bricks of our spiritual relationship.  Today every sphere of our social life is unfortunately affected.  We cannot 'write' fearlessly, neutrally.  'Truth' cannot be spoken.

This is a period of hesitation for freedom.  But the courage to 'pronounce' about it has also frozen.

Mahatma Phule, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Tagore, Tilak, Gandhi, Nehru, Ambedkar (etc.) are the shining 'pages' of our culture.  In times of total defeat, these great men responded to the intransigence of English power and built the foundation of freedom.  The 'caste wise' division of these same great men is disturbing and explains the difference between us.  Although our country is very prosperous etc., it is still not 'perfect'.  The present of the village has become very poor.  We have not yet been able to create even the minimum facilities like schools, electricity, water, roads, health.  They have not been able to give enough food to the poor and laborers.  Malnutrition of tribals has not stopped.  The present time is a fearful time of many calamities.  This time has made us 'petty' in every sense.  It is very unfortunate if two things - corrupt politics and corrupt bureaucracy - get social acceptance.  Moreover, lack of leaders with comprehensive and constructive vision is our big problem.  It is also dangerous for us as citizens to lose the ability to hold such leaders accountable.  Sometimes there was moral fear of movements and activists.  Now he is not visible.  Because the very attitude of working as a 'social obligation' has ended.  Why did this happen?  We cannot give any logical answer to this.

If fear, insecurity, violence, oppression, rape, corruption are not subtracted from our 'society', then how can we reconstruct a new society?  How to establish a new value?  'Secular egalitarian democracy' sounds nice to talk about;  But we still haven't let go of the 'old'.  Although debuting in the year of Amritmahotsav is a very pleasant event, one should also be aware of this fact while celebrating this 'Anandotsav'.  Amrut Mahotsav wishes all Indians a very Happy Independence Day hoping for some change at least in the next year.
